The Homestead Movement

We are among the growing movement seeking self-sufficiency, practices rooted in heritage, and finding solace in God's creation. Leaving the heart of Pinehurst for an abundance more land was a trade worth making when it came to the freedoms we knew were ahead of us. While the restrictions we faced in the Village were minimal among the grand scheme of things and much less compared to other parts of Moore County, chickens and bees were definitely on the watch list with no sign of budging in the near future. Ultimately, this move toward more land, privacy, and our God-given freedoms goes well beyond the desire for eggs and buzzing pollinators. Over the last 5 years, our country has been tested in ways that resonated all too close to Orwell's 1984 and if that wasn't the jolt that we needed to change our course, I don't know what honestly could have moved us so quickly (literally and figuratively). From food production, healthcare, and the overwhelming exposures we face on a daily basis, we felt strongly that we could no longer sit idly by and live blindfolded. The veil had officially been lifted, and once that occurs, can you ever really go back?

Despite personally entering unchartered territories and attempting to change our way of living one day at a time, we are so encouraged by the many other families and farms embarking on similar journeys. We may never fully get it right, but with set intentions and our faith in God's plan for us, we are certainly going to try. As we continue to learn from those who have paved the way before us, we embark on each day with open hearts and open minds ready and willing to see the bright future ahead.

As the first Independence Day on the farm, this 4th feels even sweeter. Today we celebrate living in the greatest country in the world, thanks to the brave men and women who have fought for the freedoms we behold today. Happy 4th of July!
